Right now in the United States, we’re in the warmest season of the year — summer. Ask a bunch of people the reason why they love summer and you’re more than likely going to hear things along the lines of “laying on the beach” or “taking a vacation.” Sure, those things are nice, but if you asked me why I love summer, I’d say something that you probably would not expect. I love summer for . . . the open windows.
Open windows?! What do you mean, Erik?!
Well obviously the warm summer weather makes it comfortable to have your windows open, but I’m not talking about the windows you have on your home. I’m talking about your car windows. I LOVE having my car windows down while I drive. For me, summertime means my car windows are down and my music is blasting. It’s been that way for me for as long as I can remember. Windows down, music up! That’s my slogan, ya’ll.
But it doesn’t have to be music that’s blastin’.
Music ain’t the only thing you can blast out of your car when cruising down the highway in the summa summa summatime. You can also pump up your favorite podcast! That’s what I’ve been doing lately and I can’t get enough of the audio goodness that’s podcasts.
Podcasts?! What are podcasts?!
If you’re not too familiar with podcasts, that’s totally cool. I got your back. In short, podcasts are digital audio files that are made available on the Internet for downloading to your computer or mobile device. They’re pretty much radio shows you can download. Most podcasts are typically available as a series that features new installments (or episodes) that can be received by subscribers automatically.
Radiolab!
I commute about an hour each way to get to and from my job. It’s not the most ideal situation, but hey, it is what it is. So with that being said, there’s only so much music I can listen to. After a while, ya gotta mix it up a bit, so for me, that’s where podcasts started to come in. The first podcast I fell in love with was Radiolab at around the beginning of 2010. It’s amazing (and I’ve even seen Radiolab live in Detroit and in New York City). Very often you can catch me in my car blastin’ some Radiolab. Big ups to Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich!
Podcasts for SLPs
Back in 2015, I wrote a blog post titled 3 Podcasts That All Speech-Language Pathologists Should Check out ASAP. It’s actually one of my favorite blog posts EVER because I got a ton of responses from it where people said to me, “Hey Erik, you should start a podcast. I’d totally listen.” Those messages meant the world to me.
The seed was planted in in 2015.
Those people planted the podcast seed in my brain and I kept watering it by consuming more and more podcasts. In fact, I think the word consume is a bit too tame. I didn’t consume podcasts, I absolutely devoured them! And all the while, I kept saying to myself, “One day, Erik, one day you’ll start a podcast and it’s going to be oodles and oodles of fun.”
Well, that one day is now.
The summer is here and I’m devoting these warmer months to finally learning about how to create a podcast. I have a loose idea as to what the show will be about. It’s going to have a real SLP flair to it because I love speech therapy as much as I like my car windows down while driving around on a nice, warm summer day. So if you’re an SLP, you very well might be into the podcast that I create.
I’m starting from scratch.
I don’t have a clue about how to make a podcast. I’m absolutely clueless. But hey, we were all clueless about something at some point in time, right? With hard work and determination, I can figure it out. I hope you stick with me as I dig deep into this podcast thing. And I promise, this blog will be the first place I announce the details about the podcast. Thanks, in advance, for your support. Hopefully once this podcast is out, you might want to blast it in your own car while your windows are down! That would rock! Stay tuned.
